    Ophiocordyceps communis Hywel-Jones & Samson Stud. Mycol. 57: 38 (2007)

    Anamorph state: Hirsutella/Hymenostilbe-like.

    Description:

    Hosts are adult termites, in pairs, surrounded by coarse white mycelium. Stroma filiform, up to 200 µm, ca. 100 mm emerging above ground, 300-600 µm wide below ground, 600-1000 µm wide above ground; whitish-gray below ground, above-ground portion usually hairy with sterile, yellow-brown hairs becoming smooth, silver-brown to gray. Perithecia subterminal, superficial but tightly packed around stipe; 300-650 x 200-400 µm. Asci with stout cap, 8-spored, filiform, up to 250 µm, 15 µm diam. Ascospores whole, stout, lightly pigmented 100-180 x 5-6 µm.   This species is only found in central Thailand. However, when it is found tens of specimens can be found in an area of about 20 x 20 meters. This is why it was named Ophiocordyceps communis - the communal Ophiocordyceps.
